Willona received an Artist Fellowship award from the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities, and was awarded two artist residencies at Banff Centre for the Arts in Alberta, Canada. She is an alum of the VONA Voices writing workshop for writers of color.

Willona teaches creative and professional writing workshops and leads literary-focused networking events. She also founded the Write.Drink.Read. series of happy writing hours. She has taught workshops in the Washington, DC area at the Writer’s Center, Flashpoint Gallery, Hamiltonian Gallery and the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery. She also led workshops in partnership with The Reykjavík UNESCO City of Literature and the Reykjavík International Literary Festival.

She released the e-pub Come to Our Show: Punk Show Flyers from D.C. to Down Under, which has been downloaded more than 15,000 times.

Willona earned a B.A. in English from the University of Virginia and an M.A. in Literature from American University.
