Ms. Newsome joined LISC in 1995 as the Executive Director of LISC DC. Today, Ms. Newsome is the Vice President for the LISC DC and the LISC Virginia programs. She has direct oversight and manages the work of the Washington, DC LISC program and supervises the Executive Director of the Virginia LISC program.
Prior to joining LISC DC, Ms. Newsome worked as a Program Director for the Enterprise Foundation, a City Planner and Homeless Services Coordinator for the City of Fort Worth Texas, and a Planner for Cobb County, Georgia. She has traveled extensively across the United States, writing funding proposals and providing technical assistance to small and mid-size towns. She is also the recipient of the City First Bank Baptist Award in honor of their Founder, Debi Hurd Baptist, the American Dream Award from Manna, Inc. and named a Community Champion by Capital One.
Ms. Newsome published the book Becoming What We Can Be: Stories of Community Development in Washington, DC, written by Tony Proscio. The book chronicles stories of community development in Washington, DC and honors local community development trailblazers. It gives insight into a movement that dreamed big, weathered setbacks, and persevered, bringing unimagined rebirth to neighborhoods such as Columbia Heights and the H Street Corridor.
Ms. Newsome was selected for the prestigious Eugene and Agnes E. Meyer Foundation Julie L. Rogers Sabbatical Program. In 2017 she will take a 3 month sabbatical in recognition of her long-term service and commitment to the work of community development and neighborhood revitalization in the District of Columbia.
Ms. Newsome lectures to undergraduate and graduate classes as well as conducts training in the field of community development and neighborhood revitalization. She holds a Bachelors of Science in Public Administration from Auburn University and a Masters of Science in Community Development and Planning from Georgia State University. Ms. Newsome was a Fannie Mae Fellow at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government Program for Senior Executives and a graduate of Leadership Washington, Class of 1999. Ms. Newsome presently serves as member of the District of Columbia’s Housing Trust Fund Advisory Board, the Advisory Board of the DC Fiscal Policy Institute and the District of Columbia Economic Strategy Advisory Committee.
